Doug Gordon

Doug Gordon

Followers of the Paddle In The Park Contest will surely remember Doug. In 2013 he, along with his friend Tim, went on a trip to find a paddle, certain they knew where it was. Doug wrote about their adventure in such a heartwarming and beautiful way and we were very touched to have been a small part of their story. So in 2014, we all decided that it would be very fitting if a previous paddle finder should become a paddle hider, in a kind of pay-it-forward way, sharing the rewards to getting “Out There” to another happy paddler.

Doug’s passion for paddling, hiking and nordic skiing began in his childhood. His journeys have included many canoeing and hiking trips to Algonquin, Killarney, Temagami and north of Lake Superior along with end-to-end hikes along The Pennine Way in Great Britain and The West Coast Trail in British Columbia. Doug has spent a year drilling water wells in northern Uganda guided more than 200 young people and adults into the wilderness with a non-profit outdoor program called Manitou Adventures. Since 2007 Doug has focused his annual autumn trips on exploring sites of special significance for First Nations and The Group of Seven. His experiences while on these adventures inspired him to start a blog last year entitled “Considering Manitou – Creative Non-Fiction Inspired by Mystery“. He really loved sharing the joy of “getting out there” with others as he became a paddle hider during the second season of the Paddle In The Park Contest.

His greatest source of satisfaction, however, is found in sharing life with his wife, Kelly; children, Jenna & Andrew; and dogs, Oreo & Charlie. Doug lives with family in Stratford, ON where he works as a community mental health worker with the Huron Perth Healthcare Alliance.
