Peterborough Marine Heritage

Peterborough Marine Heritage

This plaque is on the Otonabee River Trail in Downtown Peterborough and highlights how the Peterborough area is generally regarded as the birthplace of the modern day canoe. Building cedar-strip canoes in the Peterborough area began in the 1850s and continued into the 1960s. Peterborough is now home of the Canadian Canoe Museum, the Canada’s largest collection of canoes and canoe history.
